Regulations

Employers have to comply with the OSHA safety and health regulations.

Who enforces the OSHA regulations?

Private sector workplaces fall under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of Labor/OSHA. The phone number for the OSHA area office in Maine is 207-626-9160.

Maine public sector workplaces (state, county and municipal workplaces, including public schools and colleges) are under the Maine Department of Labor/Bureau of Labor Standards. Telephone: 207-623-7900.

"We've had businesses call and ask what we do for safety programs and we tell them about your office and (that we) use SafetyWorks! ... (A) plant wide inspection lets us know what the problems are before OSHA comes in and prevents employees from getting injured."

(Please note: OSHA regulations provide a minimal level of protection for workers. They do not cover every workplace hazard. Employers may need to go beyond the legal standards to protect workers from the dangers at their workplaces. Industry best practices can often guide employers who seek greater protection for employees.)
